Innovation and Versatility are key drivers for Australia’s premier supplier of rowing launch pontoons. This has been well demonstrated in recent months with installations completed at the Champion Lakes regatta facility in Perth and the Tamar Rowing club in Launceston, Tasmania.

Engineered Water Systems (EWS) has been designing and installing Poralu pontoons for over 7 years. A highly respected European manufacturer, Poralu Marine have been contracted to provide the entire rowing pontoon infrastructure for the 2012 Olympics to be held in London. EWS have installations in most states and is looking to expand its business in this niche market.

The fundamental features of the installations including; marine grade aluminium frame, 316 s/s fasteners, the option for EPS (expanded polystyrene) floats for safety and durability, remain the same for both as does the unique tiled decking which is guaranteed for 10 years. However, it is the vastly different environments in which the systems have been installed which really demonstrates the versatility of the Poralu pontoons.

The installation at Champion lakes comprises 4 21m x 5m “finger” pontoons each of which is connected to a concrete abutment by a single 6m x 3m access gangway. The articulated gangways accommodate small (300-400mm) changes in water level in the lake and provide easy access for rowers, kayakers and dragon-boaters as well as providing a platform for other aquatic activities.

The 50m x 3.2m Tamar installation on the other hand was developed to cope with a much larger range of tides (up to 3m). In addition the pontoon has been specially designed and incorporates an outer articulation which will allow club members themselves to easily remove the outer portion of the pontoon from the path of potential flood flows if required. At low tides the pontoons rest on the muddy embankment of the Tamar River but still provide a launching spot in the dredged channel at the end of the pontoon.

With the ability to match such a versatile system with site specific requirements EWS has several other projects under construction and would welcome enquiries from other clubs or associations that may be in need of a pontoon.
